PREVENT-A-LITTER

Each Spring, adoption/rescue groups and shelters are flooded with litters of puppies and kittens, born to unaltered dogs and cats. With each new litter, the number of homeless pets grows and these new puppies and kittens find themselves fighting for a limited number of homes -- with an uncertain future when there are not enough homes to be found.

In February each year, the Doris Day Animal Foundation and The Humane Society of the United States sponsor a national Spay Day. This year, the 14th annual Spay Day USA falls on the last Tuesday of February (Feb 26, 2008). The goal of this campaign is to inspire people to save animal lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats.

According to HSUS, “thousands of kittens and puppies are born every hour in the United States. While these baby animals are adorable, the fate of most of them is tragic. Spaying or neutering our pets and feral cats is the most effective way to reduce the vast numbers of animals who are born only to die prematurely and without a family who loves them.”

There are many ways you can help make a difference:

Spay or neuter your pets. Check with local veterinarians, your local shelter, or regional HSUS office for information about Spay Day USA events, including discounted spay/neuter services.

Volunteer at a Spay Day USA event.

Sponsor a spay or neuter for a pet belonging to a friend, family member, neighbor, or co-worker or through a humane society, adoption group, or feral cat rescue organization

If you would like to help Gwinnett Humane Society and your local community, we have an exciting offer for you!

Stan Wilson, Sergeant with Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department by day and Gwinnett’s own local musical treasure by night, composed, performed, and recorded a fabulous song called “Neuter That Boy”. This catchy tune is sure to make you laugh, tap your feet, but also make you think about the importance of the issue of pet overpopulation.

Every caring pet owner should own at least one copy (one for your car, one for your home, and don’t forget your MP3 player)…oh, and they also make great gifts and what great way to send a hint to someone about altering their own pet!!

To purchase your copy, visit the GHS STORE. All proceeds will benefit Gwinnett Humane Society’s Spay/Neuter program.
